Prospect Showcase
Cardboard of Former College Summer League Players Sizzles
|
We told you so. There's no other way to put it.
MinorLeagueNetwork.com not only targets the top prospects in the country, we deliver their first baseball cards ever printed, too.
Like recent summer studs Joba Chamberlain and Jacoby Ellsbury, all of the following future stars developed their skills at one time in a college summer league and now are primed for the big show. That's how we discovered them.
Here are the ones we've been following. You should follow them, too:
-
Michael Taylor may be the Philadelphia Phillies' best prospect. His first card is from the 2005 Mat-Su Miners (Alaska) team set.
-
Arguably the top prospect in the 2008 draft, Justin Smoak was selected by the Texas Rangers with the eleventh overall pick. Smoak's first card is included in the 2006 Cotuit Kettleers (Cape Cod) team set.
-
The minor leagues' most dominating starter? Tommy Hanson of the Braves could make that claim. The 2006 Aloha Knights team set (West Coast) contains his first card ever.
-
Beau Mills was named the Cleveland Indians' Minor League Player of Year. Mills' first-ever card is 2005 Salinas Valley Packers (California Collegiate) issue; Beau played for that club after graduating from high school.
-
Jason Castro and Ike Davis were both picked in the first round, by the Astros and Mets, respectively. The 2006 Anchorage Bucs (Alaska) team set has both players' first cards ever printed.
-
Fresno State's Tommy Mendonca, was the hero of the College World Series and later starred for Team USA. His first card is in the 2007 Anchorage Bucs (Alaska) team set.
-
One of the country's most dangerous hitters, Brett Wallace, was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals at #13 . His first card is in the 2006 Falmouth Commodores (Cape Cod) team set.
-
John Raynor is considered one of the most exciting prospects in the minor leagues. The 2005 Wilmington Sharks (Coastal Plains) issue contains the first card ever of this Marlins' prospect.
-
Kellen Kulbacki (Padres), who's first card appears in the 2006 Cotuit team set, was named a Topps Class A All-Star.
-
The prospect with the highest ceiling in the 2008 draft? It may be Jordan Danks, picked the White Sox. Jordan's first card is a 2005 Beatrice Bruins (MINK) issue.

With extremely low print runs and ultra-talented prospects, these summer league cards are one of the best investments in the hobby. They're also recognized by major grading companies like BGS and PSA.
Imagine what a Roger Clemens summer league issue would be worth today?

2006 Anchorage Bucs team set Catching Fire
The 2006 Anchorage Bucs may have finished second in the Alaska Baseball League, but this team is rising to the top when it comes to pro talent.
In addition to Ike Davis and Jason Castro (see above), this issue features the first-ever cards of numerous high-round draft choices this June: RHP Andrew Liebel (Blue Jays) and 1B Shane Peterson (A's), both from Long Beach State; and fire-balling reliever Matt Gorgen (Rays); as well as cards of Tyson Ross (A's), a projected first-rounder who fell to #58 overall, and Rice's Adam Zornes (Padres).
The team set also includes first-ever card of Taiwanese pitcher Po-Yu Lin (White Sox) and a card of five-tool talent Bryan Petersen (Marlins/UC Irvine). Buy it now >>

PLUS: Next Wave
One Hurler Makes Bigs, Two More to Follow

Few organizations develop pitchers like the Florida Marlins - Josh Beckett, Scott Olsen, Dontrelle Willis, etc. - and the next wave of arms will come from the 2005 draft.
The 2005 Jamestown Jammers Update set (pictured) includes the first-ever cards of three first round picks: Aaron Thompson, Ryan Tucker, and Sean West. Tucker and West have already pitched in the major leagues. $5.95
